About this Page:
Aside from Dan Harris’ (illustrator extraordinaire) map duel and fingerprint characters, the rest of the page is designed by myself. Illustrating a concept so that it isn’t so literal is proving difficult, but it is a good exercise for my brain. I wanted to illustrate a 3D blob of sorts expanding off of a 2D page to symbolize the map projection concept. Panel 4 is the best I came up with, and in general, I think effective. I used Willem Blaeu’s map that is long since been in the public domain to show you his genius fantasy/reality works. Here is a link to the real image. One of the most significant things I remember when on walkabout (ok just backpacking) in Oz were the aboriginal cave drawings we saw. I pay homage to their cultural contributions here and remember our guide telling us that without scrawling water-hole information on the side of a cave, they would have died. As a geography teacher, it is one of those things that will always stick with me. There is no better proof that geography is a matter of life and death.
