Space vs Place

About this Page:

A big thanks to Dan Harris my illustrator for crafting the characters on this page-backgrounds and texts from myself.

As a geography lover, I have a growing interest in this topic (space vs. place).  As we’ve move from an analogue to digital world, the way we identify with our physical space is changing. I think a lot about the topic of what we “care for”-what I care for. We’ve seen the way that the internet has created new virtual spaces to hold dear and protect. With the rise of role playing games and virtual locations in games/apps that you can commodify with advertisements, the spaces that we care for are changing. Is virtual space…..place?

I’ve always imagined that what we care for can be illustrated in a simple pie-graph. What percentage do you dedicate towards your family, house, your health, food, material things, and any other problems that pop up? For myself, I know that when a parent calls and complains that a test was too long, or when a neighbor suggests that they want to build a shed in front of our backyard view, my blood pressure rises and that section of my pie chart just grew. It becomes the only thing that I can think about and it grates me that I let that part of the pie grow so big, over such a small problem.  I also equate this with how we dedicate our care for the physical and virtual spaces. The more we curate our lives online, the less we curate our lives in the physical space.

Now, remember that you are reading a blog post from someone who loves all things tech and the internet, but I also despise the loss of time dedicated towards my online life and I long for a better connection with nature. I’m still finding ways to balance my pie-chart. How about you?
